International Obesity Treatment and Research Expert Nikhlil Durandhar will speak at the College of Life Sciences Seminar November 12.
Nikhil Durandhar, Ph.D. will speak at the BYU College of Life Sciences Seminar on November 12, 2020 as the BYU Department of Public Health Speaker. Dr. Durandhar is an international expert in obesity treatment and research, a physician, and a biochemist. He is a professor and Chair of the Department of Nutritional Sciences at Texas Tech University, a Helen Devitt Jones Endowed Chair, Editor-In-Chief of Nutrition and Diabetes, a consultant for companies and organizations, and has served as President of the Obesity Society.
After receiving his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Mumbai, Dr. Dhurandhar has continued to study the causes of and treatments for obesity, especially relating to molecular biology and obesity due to microbes. He emphasizes the role that infection can play in obesity, and has coined the term “infectobesity” as a name for the field of research. In his 35 years of research and treatment, he has treated over 15,000 patients using lifestyle therapy and pharmacological approaches.
Dr. Dhurandhar has published over 140 scientific publications and received numerous awards, including the 2015 Osborne and Mendel Award from the American Society for Nutrition, 2017 Bluebonnet Award for the Texas Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and the 2018 Barnie Rushing Jr. Faculty Distinguished Research Award from Texas Tech University. Esquire magazine named him in their list of thirty “Best and Brightest Minds in the U.S.” His book, “Dr.Dhurandhar’s Fat Loss Diet” was #1 Best Seller on Amazon India and Times of India listed it as one of the 10 most dependable books on weight loss published in 2018.
